BackIoPPN Youth Awards – King’s College London
Congratulations to thirteen Year 12 students at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form (Aquiles, Divyam, Valentine, Gisela, Chloe, Grace, Rihanna, Anelechi, Tyrone, Benita, Esther, Marissa, Dilys) who have all been offered a place on this year’s IoPPN (Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience) Youth Awards.
Their submitted applications were impressive and stood out amongst the high volume of applications received by King’s College London. As a result, these students should be proud of what they have accomplished and the relevance of their written text answers which met the criteria.
Westminster City School caught up with some of these students to find out more about how they will benefit from this year’s IoPPN Youth Awards.
What motivated you to apply for The IoPPN Youth Awards?
Esther
The first thing that motivated me to apply is the fact that there is a Psychology strand. This is something I'm extremely interested in as well and would like to study at a higher education level. Additionally, King’s College London is my dream university to study a degree in Psychology and I liked the fact that this award will give me the chance to have a hands-on experience.
DivyamDue to my deep passion for Biostatistics, Health Informatics and my aspiration to pursue a career in medicine, I decided to apply for the IoPPN Youth Awards. Biostatistics fascinates me because of its vital role in designing and interpreting studies that advance medical knowledge and improve public health. Health Informatics captivates me as it integrates healthcare and technology, leveraging electronic health records, telemedicine, and clinical decision support systems to enhance patient care.
BENITAI was motivated to apply for this award so that I can gain insight into studying Psychology at university and understand more about the subject, including the challenges and how to overcome any given academic challenges related to the subject.
TYRONEI have always had an interest in the field of psychology and saw this as an excellent opportunity for me to deepen my knowledge and understanding in this area. As part of the application process, there were a series of questions which we had to answer to the best of our ability in a brief and clearly expressed manner.
What does this award mean to you?
EstherThis award means a lot to me as it is a stepping stone opportunity that will empower me to pursue psychology at a higher education level. It has helped me realise that this is definitely something I want to do as a career, and receiving further understanding will be extremely useful and beneficial.
Divyam
A place in this year's IoPPN Youth Awards means a tremendous amount to me. It signifies a pivotal step in my journey towards becoming a doctor, equipping me with invaluable experiences and connections that will shape my path. I am incredibly excited about the prospect of learning and contributing to advancements in healthcare through this prestigious programme.
BENITA
It is very important to me knowing that I have been offered a place on this award because it will allow me to meet people that I would not meet otherwise which will be helpful for my personal and professional development. Building my network will give me the opportunity to learn from others who have different backgrounds and experiences.
TYRONEReceiving a place on this award has reinforced in me the importance of putting myself forward and applying for opportunities even if I feel it may be unlikely to be accepted. I believe it is absolutely necessary to put yourself out there or else it is easy to become stagnant.
What are your future aspirations?
Esther
I am currently studying Geography, Politics and Psychology, and. Once I have completed my A-levels at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, I will take the necessary steps needed to pursue a career as a Clinical Psychologist specialising in working with children and adolescents.
DivyamMy future aspirations are centred around pursuing a career in medicine. Ultimately, I envision myself as a physician who integrates rigorous scientific analysis with compassionate patient care. I aspire to make a positive impact in the medical field by applying cutting-edge research and technology to improve healthcare delivery and public health initiatives.
The A-level subjects that I am currently studying at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form are Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
BENITA
I aspire to go to university to study Psychology as my plan is to become a Psychotherapist. The A-level subjects that I am studying are Biology, Psychology and Sociology which will help me to understand the fundamentals of the area I would like to pursue in the future.
TYRONEAfter my time at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, my plan is to go to university. I have not yet decided on the specific university that I would like to attend, but I am certain that the work experience at the IoPPN, King’s College London in the summer will enable me to make the right decision.
I am currently studying A-levels in the following subjects, Biology, Economics and Psychology.
All successful applicants are offered a £50 book voucher and a certificate of attendance. The awards will be given in person at the IoPPN to gain first-hand experience of university and research. ‘Each award will vary and awardees will get the opportunity to meet a range of researchers and academics and gain insight into what further study and careers in STEM subjects entail.’
