Burberry Women in Tech Event

17 June 2024

On Monday 17 June, selected students in Year 12 were invited to attend a Women in Tech Changemaker Challenge in collaboration with Burberry and Verizon. The event was facilitated by Verizon, Burberry and Unloc at Verizon's Innovation Hub in Holborn.

Students were able to hear from industry experts by means of a career panel talk where professionals spoke about the journey that they took for their specific career paths and why they are passionate about the job that they do. Other activities included skills masterclasses where students took part in a hands on skills based activity related to a topic. The day was a great success and students demonstrated excellent entrepreneurial skills.

Year 12 student, Hermela who had the privilege to be part of the day said:

"I thoroughly enjoyed the Women in Tech event. It was both informative and engaging, highlighting the lack of female representation in the technology field which shouldn't be the case. We also learnt that careers in technology does not necessarily require Computer Science or much prior technological knowledge which was very encouraging.

"We did a group activity where we used technology to improve the shopping experience of individuals and everyone came up with some great ideas such as digital clothing hangers, smart mirrors and more. I would say attending the event has given me insight into the field of technology."

Jamoi, who is also in Year 12 at Westminster City School's Sixth Form added:

"One of the highlights was an engaging panel discussion featuring several inspiring women in tech. Denika, a senior member in tech, shared her journey and highlighted her favorite moments, including building the commercial internet and the evolution of smartphones. Tara Mooar captivated us with her unique path from an in-style coordinator to a tech professional, showcasing the diverse backgrounds that lead to success in tech.

"Olivia, a project coordinator, emphasised her passion for the social and communication aspects of her role, demonstrating the importance of these skills in technology projects. Rowen, a senior project manager at Burberry shared her fascinating transformation from studying psychology and zoology to becoming a business analyst, illustrating the diverse pathways to a career in tech."
