BackPrestigious Stephen Lawrence Scholarship
Staff and students at Westminster City School are delighted to be celebrating with alumni, Stephen Appiah Kubi who left Westminster City School in Summer 2022 after completing his A Levels. He has been awarded the Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship at Mansfield College, Oxford.
Stephen expressed his thoughts with the press team at Mansfield College, Oxford saying:
"I was thrilled to be given this opportunity and honoured to join 13 other scholars in honouring the legacy of Stephen Lawrence. I was encouraged by my college tutor and mentor, Ajay Graham, a Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholar last year, to apply.
"I was drawn to the programme because of the bespoke 15-month development programme it offered, presenting me with a chance to enhance my professional skills, develop skills I may be lacking, and gain professional experience in an array of sectors. I am very excited to begin the programme and to see what the future holds and would advise anyone thinking of applying to this scholarship in future to just go for it.”
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Doreen Lawrence, Baroness Lawrence of Clarendon, OBE are working together to broaden access to careers in large commercial law firms and other careers in the City of London.
The Freshfields Stephen Lawrence Scholarship Scheme is designed to address the disproportionate under-representation in large commercial law firms and other City institutions of black men from less socially mobile backgrounds. The scheme is aimed at eligible first year law students at participating universities nationwide, and some other students at a small group of those universities.
