Intermediate Mathematical Challenge

1 February 2024

On Wednesday 31 January, 120 students from Years 9 to 11 at Westminster City School participated in the UK Maths Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge which is a 60-minute, 25 multiple choice competition. It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency. Additionally, the problems on the Intermediate Maths Challenge are designed to make students think, most of the problems are accessible, yet it still challenge those with more experience.

In general, Maths competitions can help students to gain confidence in tackling unfamiliar mathematical challenges. They are also particularly valuable for our highest achieving students as the questions get progressively harder throughout the paper proving to be challenging and thought-provoking, thus a suitable stretch for these students.

Mr Okyere, who leads Maths Enrichment and coordinates Primary School Transition commented:

“Choosing to participate deserves recognition alone, and we commend all students who took part.

“To recognise the highest performers in the challenge, the top-scoring 50% of participants are awarded bronze, silver and gold certificates in the ratio 3:2:1. Students that are ‘Best in Year’ or ‘Best in School’ will also receive a badge to denote this on their certificates. Students who are not amongst the high scorers will receive a 'Certificate of Participation'. The very highest performers will be invited to take part in either the Cayley, Hamilton or Maclaurin Olympiad for ‘Follow-on-Rounds."
