BackBright Futures Ahead, Target Oxbridge
Congratulations to Year 12 students, Joel, Renae and Deron, who have received a place on the Target Oxbridge Programme which is aimed at helping students of black and African Caribbean heritage to secure places at Oxford and Cambridge. Westminster City School caught up with Joel and Deron who have both provided an in-depth insight into the process and what motivated them to apply for Target Oxbridge.
Tell us a bit about the process and why you applied?
Joel’s answer
We first had to do a general application including approximately 500 word questions and when I passed that stage I had to do a phone call interview about my chosen subject, Modern Languages. I applied because I felt that this programme would help to give me and people like me the best chance at reaching my goal of attending an Oxbridge University.
Deron’s answer
Initially, I was disheartened when I was informed that I hadn't been successful in gaining a place on the programme. However, later, by the grace of God, I received a call from a Target Oxbridge representative informing me that a space had opened up, and they were offering it to me. I accepted the opportunity without hesitation.
What do you hope to gain from the programme?
Joel’s answer
I hope to gain key skills that are essential for the workplace and in my personal life. If I pass through to the interview stage or for the general application process and I also am excited to be a part of a community of like-minded individuals all striving for the same aim.
Deron’s answer
From the programme, I hope to gain invaluable mentorship and guidance tailored to my needs, helping me to navigate the complexities of the Oxbridge application process. I aim to improve my academic skills, gain insight into university life, and enhance my confidence in presenting myself effectively.
What are your future aspirations after life at Westminster City School's Sixth Form?
Joel’s answer
I aim to go into journalism or communications in the future and I am looking to study something that I enjoy and will help me stand out, hence History & Modern Languages. I look forward to what this programme will do to help me do that!
Deron’s answer
Looking ahead, my aspirations include attending Oxford to study PPE (Philosophy, Politics, and Economics) and eventually securing a pivotal role in the financial industry. Target Oxbridge provides a crucial stepping stone towards achieving these goals, and I am eager to make the most of this opportunity.
‘Since launching in 2012, Target Oxbridge has helped over 350 students to secure Oxbridge offers. The various strands of the programme focus on intellectual, cultural and social development irrespective of personal or economic barriers.’
