Virtual Debate Mate Competition

5 June 2024

On Tuesday 4 June, Westminster City School's Debate Team which includes Suhaib, Edward, Aanil, Aman and Sebastian, took part in the Virtual Debate Mate Competition.

The students debated two motions: round one was "this house would make a 4-day school week"; and round two was "this house would ban robots". Amongst the techniques that the mentors shared with the students were PEEL (point, explain, example, link); altering the tone of their voice; use of linking connectives to build and develop their arguments; and use of gestures and body language to demonstrate confidence in what they are saying.

The team did a spectacular job representing Westminster City School and won both rounds of the competition defeating Charter School North Dulwich and St Joseph's College. This experience will stand the team in very good stead for the in-person competition which will be held on Thursday 13 June.

A huge congratulations and well done to the debate team for their excellent performance.
