Journalism Experience Day at The Independent

27 November 2024

On Wednesday 27 November, selected Sixth Form students who are interested in journalism were given the opportunity to visit the headquarters of The Independent Newspaper. Students received an exclusive tour around the newsroom, had the chance to ask questions and gain insight into the career of a Journalist from Assistant Editor, Caroline Gammell.

Year 13 student at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, Joel, shared his experience saying:

"It was really eye-opening to hear from both the Assistant Editor and Editor of The Independent about their roles and how they got to where they are from student journalism at university to junior reporting and rising up.

“It was especially inspiring to hear that while journalism is a very tough career path to choose, if you love and enjoy the thrill, you will be able to withstand the times when it's not so thrilling. In the future I want to be a financial journalist, and so my day at The Independent was definitely a great step in the right direction."

Year 12 student, Akash, added:

“I found the experience enlightening and interesting. It shed light onto a career path that is often hard to get an insight into. It was interesting to hear how media companies, like The Independent, embrace new technologies such as Artificial Intelligence as well as hearing how these companies battle misinformation in the digital age.

“In the future, I would like to pursue a career in Law, but I think that it is also important for me to keep an open mind towards journalism and the possible careers within that field.”

The Independent is a British online newspaper. It was established in 1986 as a national morning printed paper.
