Year 11 Student Andrew Shines in British Mathematical Olympiad
In an outstanding achievement, Andrew, who is in Year 11 at Westminster City School, has excelled in the prestigious British Mathematical Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1). This was the follow-on round to the Senior Maths Challenge which was held on Wednesday 20 November 2024, and Andrew's performance earned him a distinction, with a remarkable score of 46 out of 60, placing him amongst the top performers in the round which qualified him for the next stage, BMO2.
BMO1 is a rigorous 3.5-hour challenge consisting of six Olympiad-style problems, each worth 10 marks. Entry to the competition is by invitation, either through qualifying scores from the Senior Maths Challenge or by discretionary entry. Out of approximately 1,000 students who qualify for BMO1 each year, only around 100 students progress to BMO2 which took place on Wednesday 22 January 2025.
The British Mathematical Olympiad is an important step towards the selection of the UK team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), which will take place on the sunshine coast, Queensland, Australia, in July 2025. Students who performed exceptionally well in BMO2 will undergo further training and selection before the final team of six are chosen to represent the UK for the 66th International Mathematical Olympiad.
The school community is celebrating Andrew’s success, and we would like to extend our thanks to Mr Okyere, the dedicated Maths Teacher who has worked tirelessly to help students prepare for these challenging exams. Mr Okyere has devoted countless hours running practice sessions during lunchtimes and after school, providing essential support to students like Andrew.
Congratulations to Andrew on this remarkable achievement, and further updates will be shared following the results of BMO2.
