British Biology Olympiad Success for Students

13 March 2025

The British Biology Olympiad is a competition open to schools across the UK which challenges and stimulates students with an interest in biology to expand and extend their talents. This year 18, 533 students from 1,053 schools participated in the Olympiad. Across these students, 5% achieved gold, 10% silver, 15% bronze, 15% ‘highly commended’ and 15% ‘commended’.

Miss Chaudhry, Head of Science at Westminster City School, said:

“As a department, we are very proud of all our biology students for participating, including students who also fall into the above categories. We had 2 students achieve bronze awards, 3 students achieved ‘highly commended’, and 8 students achieved ‘commended’.”

Musu, who is in Year 12 at Westminster City School (bronze award winner), had this to say:

“Participating in the Biology Olympiad has not only allowed me to apply what I learn in my lessons into different contexts but has also allowed me to deepen my understanding of biology beyond the curriculum. This experience challenged my problem-solving skills and reinforced my passion for the subject, which is why I was very pleased when I was awarded a bronze certificate!”

Olohirere, who is also in Year 12 at Westminster City School (bronze award winner), said:

“Taking part in the Biology Olympiad was an amazing experience because it tested content both in the A Level Specification as well as extra knowledge, outside of the specification whilst in a competitive setting. The Olympiad gave me the opportunity to apply all the topics I have learned in class to real life scenarios, strengthening my problem-solving skills.”

Well done and congratulations to every student who took part and represented Westminster City School with such enthusiasm and determination.
