WCS Hosts Second Annual Iftar: An Evening of Unity and Giving

25 April 2025

This year, Westminster City School’s Islamic Society (ISOC) hosted its second annual Iftar, an event that brought together students and families from all walks of life to share in the spirit of Ramadan. What started as a small gathering last year has grown into something truly special, with nearly 200 guests attending this year’s celebration.

Mr Ali, Geography teacher at Westminster City School and a key member of ISOC, reflected on how much the society has grown:

“To be at a Christian school in Victoria, Central London where an Iftar was organised by an Islamic Society for almost 200 guests, speaks volume. It’s as monumental as it sounds, and the students involved deserve so much recognition. From just 5 or 6 people last year to over 30 students, both Muslim and non-Muslim, from across different year groups; it has been humbling to see how the society has grown. Watching the students take on new responsibilities and grow in confidence as they planned this event was truly inspiring, and I know it’s something they’ll forever cherish and look back on with much pride. Raising over £2000 for Medical Aid in Palestine was a big achievement, and the positive feedback from students and parents shows how far we’ve come.”

For Hameeda, a Year 13 student and Lead Representative of ISOC, this Iftar was very special. She shared:

“As Lead Representative, I’ve been so proud to help re-establish the society this year. It has become a space where Muslim students feel represented, supported, and heard. Hosting the WCS Iftar during Ramadan was a true highlight as it really brought everyone together to share in faith, reflection, and unity.

Although it was quite challenging at times preparing for the event, we kept reminding ourselves that ‘with hardship comes ease,’ as the Quran says. Seeing everything come together, from managing the logistics to the decorations, was so rewarding. The heart of the event was about raising awareness and supporting those suffering in Gaza. We wanted the Iftar to be more than just a gathering; it was a message of solidarity and our responsibility to speak up for justice. I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved, and I hope what we’ve started this year continues to grow and inspire others for years to come.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved, and I truly believe we’ve left a lasting mark on WCS ISOC’s legacy. I hope what we’ve built this year continues to inspire and grow in the years to come.”

The event wasn’t just about coming together to break fast but it was also a powerful reminder of the importance of standing together for a cause. Thanks to the hard work of the students, the Iftar raised over £2000 for Medical Aid in Palestine, making a meaningful impact for those in need.
