Annual Student Robotics Competition

19 April 2023

At the start of the Easter break, Westminster City School's team of Year 12 students participated in the annual Student Robotics competition, hosted by Southampton University.

This year's competition saw different teams from schools and universities across the country and Germany come together to showcase their skills in building and programming robots. This year’s goal was to gather as many “tokens” as possible from an arena, competing against three other robots with the same mission. Westminster City School’s team rose to the occasion, demonstrating their technical knowledge and teamwork to progress all the way to the semi-finals of the competition.

Mr Myron, the team’s supervisor and teacher of Computer Science at Westminster City School said:

“Having started in September with almost no knowledge of the mechanics or programming involved in creating an autonomous robot, the team have done so well to research, design, build and test their robot.

“The competition was a fantastic experience for all involved who were able to gain valuable skills and insights into the exciting world of robotics, as well as teamwork, project management, and problem-solving. The final at Southampton University was a great technical hot-house environment, enabling our team to interact with and learn from their peers.”

As well as the Computer Science department who organised the team, a thank you to the Design and Technology department for providing the materials and tools to build the robot and for demonstrating their patience as the design went through several iterations!

Westminster City School are proud of the team’s achievements, and look forward to seeing what they do with the skills and knowledge they gained in next year's competition.
