Year 9 Careers Trip to Schroders - Asset Management Firm

22 February 2024

Recently, a group of Y9 students took part in a ‘Business in Focus’ careers trip to Schroders, a globally renowned asset management firm with offices based in Moorgate. Students were divided into two teams and worked collaboratively with the support of corporate volunteers from Schroders to complete a business simulation challenge, which involved representing two different cities (Madrid and Chicago) to successfully plan and develop a campaign to host the next Global Games.

Each student took on a different role within their team, including CEO, Finance Manager, Fundraising Director and Advertising/Branding Manager, which allowed them to gain an insight into a range of corporate roles whilst developing key employability skills in team-building, leadership, planning, and managing under pressure in order to complete the challenge. As part of the simulation, students took part in numerous debates and business meetings, with the day culminating in a presentation by each team to showcase their efforts. Points were awarded throughout the activities for demonstrating excellent initiative, creativity, enthusiasm and teamwork. Both teams were incredibly impressive, with the Chicago team narrowly winning the challenge overall.

Whilst all students excelled and were excellent representatives for the school, two students were selected by Schroders to receive a prize in recognition of their effort and contribution to their teams on the day. We would like to congratulate Pelumi in 9D and Mukhtaar in 9P for this outstanding achievement.

The trip was organised by IntoUniversity, an organisation who work in partnership with schools and colleges to support young people from across London to gain an insight into a range of career paths. Marcus from IntoUniversity Kennington, who worked with our students throughout the day, said:

"The students from Westminster City School should be proud of both what they have accomplished with IntoUniversity and how they represented themselves and the school. They showed maturity, organisational skills and bravery in the face of a new, high paced challenge and new corporate environment.  It would be my pleasure to work with them all again."

Miss Baulcomb, Careers Coordinator for Y7-9 at Westminster City School who led the trip, was also very impressed with the students on the day. She added:

“We were so proud of our students and what they managed to achieve in such a short period of time - it was amazing to see them grow in confidence and work collaboratively with one another. They all were fantastic representatives from the school. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the IntoUniversity team and the corporate volunteers from Schroders for supporting our students so well to achieve their goals – our young people benefitted immensely from working alongside them and I have no doubt that they will be inspired to aim high in the future as a result.”

We look forward to working with IntoUniversity and Schroders again in the future. The next Year9 careers trip (to PwC) will be taking place on Monday 4 March 2024.
