Empowering Young Girls - Happy International Women's Day

7 March 2024

In recognition of International Women's Day, selected students in Year 12 at Westminster City School attended the DP World event on Thursday 7 March which was organised by Melissa Reddington-Cartmell who is the Director of External Relations, Europe at DP World.

The event was a standout experience for students involved as it allowed them to engage with industry professionals and gain insight into the work being made towards gender equality in the workplace.

Year 12 student Tryphena, shared her experience saying:

“The key takeaway for me was the powerful reminder that 'good is better than perfect.' The event, hosted by Carine Van Landschoot featured insightful discussions from panellists. Alice Woodland, Strategic Corporate Partnerships Manager at WaterAid and Liza Clay who is in charge of Organisational Design, Talent and Development, Europe Region at DP World had a meaningful conversation with Melissa Reddington-Cartmell who offered valuable advice on career progression.

“Bhavini Bhikabhai's encouragement to refine my CV using my personality and life experiences was helpful. She encouraged me to seek new opportunities in order to broaden my career horizons and my industry knowledge.

“Furthermore, my talk with Carine Van Landschoot emphasised how important it is to work hard in order to be a high achiever in life – this has left a lasting impression with me and I’m thankful to DP World and their employees for the time dedicated to ensure that we all left feeling empowered.”

Hameeda, who is also in Year 12 added:

"Attending the recent talk at DP World was a truly eye-opening experience. Hearing about the daily challenges women encounter in the workplace, especially those related to issues beyond their control. Hearing about firsthand accounts about how health issues like infertility can both physical and mentally affect work life, underscored the importance of fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.

"DP World's commitment to standing by its employees, no matter what they go through, is truly commendable. It serves as a reminder that empathy and understanding are essential in creating a workplace where everyone can thrive. I left the event feeling inspired and motivated to advocate for greater support and inclusivity within our own community - especially as lead representative of the Community Outreach Committee."

'International Women's Day is a holiday celebrated annually on March 8 as a focal point in the women's rights movement. IWD gives focus to issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.'
