Winners of the RSC Analyst Competition 2024

28 June 2024

Congratulations to Beatrice, Natalia and Victoria, current Year 12 students at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, on receiving Gold for participating in the Schools’ Analyst Competition 2024 which was organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

'The Schools’ Analyst Competition enables students competing in Year 12 to demonstrate and expand on their existing chemistry knowledge, skills and aptitude for analytical science through practical analytical experiments based on relevant societal or industrial problems. Each competition aims to provide some tasks which are relatively familiar to the students such as titrations and others which are likely to be unfamiliar, such as chromatographic separations or atomic and molecular spectroscopy.'

Year 12 student, Beatrice, who is currently studying Chemistry, Computer Science and Maths, said:

“I genuinely love Chemistry and I enjoy conducting practical experiments during lessons, as a result, I was motivated to participate in this competition and to give my very best. During the competition, it felt as though I was applying Chemistry the way I would in real life and I was given additional insight which has increased my Chemistry knowledge.

"Once I have completed my A-Levels, my plan is to pursue a career in the technology field, specifically software engineering which will enable me to form my own program to help females like myself from ethnic backgrounds to get into the technology sector."

Year 12 student Natalia, who is studying Biology, Chemistry and Psychology added:

“For me, this competition was about working effectively with others as well as focusing on organising and putting things together for their correct purpose. During our Chemistry lessons, we performed experiments such as chromatography and titration.

“These procedures were useful in terms of attaining alternative knowledge of scientific concepts. After winning this competition I realised that if you put effort into something, you can achieve the result you desire.”
