Young Economist of the Year Competition

3 July 2024

During the months of May and June, Year 12 students from Emanuel School and Westminster City School's Sixth Form collaborated on joint entries for the Young Economist of the Year Competition, run by the Royal Economic Society and Discover Economics, with the winning entry being published in the Financial Times. This involved six groups of three to five students from both schools meeting regularly, collaborating remotely and finalising their entries.

Entries focused on a variety of contemporary economics issues including whether or not the government should subsidise the purchase of electric cars, the impact of the gig economy, the case for and against a one-off cost of living payments, and if the government should tax unhealthy goods. Students worked extremely hard to produce blogs, podcasts and a video of a very high standard.

Year 12 student at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, Jamoi, said that diving into the subject on economic growth “was both challenging and enlightening.” She continued:

“The gig economy is reshaping traditional employment landscapes, and analysing its implications on economic growth provided me with deep insights into modern financial dynamics. Through rigorous research and analysis, I gained a profound understanding of how flexible work arrangements, technological advancements, and shifting labour market trends are driving economic transformations globally.

“However, the experience was not just about economics and finance. It was also about the friendships and connections I formed along the way. Collaborating with Emanuel School, Shabiha, fellow participants, discussing diverse perspectives, and sharing knowledge enriched the entire journey. These interactions highlighted the importance of teamwork and the power of collective intellect.

“This competition has undoubtedly sparked a deeper passion for economics and has equipped me with valuable skills and friendships that I will cherish moving forward.”

There will be an internal competition held in the foreseeable future where Emanuel School will be against Westminster City School, with the winning entry being a fantastic podcast on the case for and against taxing unhealthy goods.
