15 October 2024

On Monday 14 October, as part of Black History Month celebrations at Westminster City School, former student, John Olatunji delivered an empowering talk to Sixth Form students and an informal Q and A session with selected students interested in Finance. John is Senior Vice President, Global Liquidity Solutions Specialist at Citigroup. Responsible for structuring and commercialising Liquidity Solutions for Corporates and Institutions, globally.

Addressing the students in the audience, John encouraged them with words of affirmation and motivation, saying:

"Continue to leverage each other and support each other because you never know where people will be tomorrow. You have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable in certain environments and be open to welcoming new opportunities and challenges that may come your way. Always remember that throughout our lives, whatever adversity you face, resilience is what will keep you going."

Year 12 student, Yoana, who was involved in the Q and A session had positive remarks. She commented:

“This session has significantly influenced my future plans by emphasising the value of continuous learning and adaptability in the finance sector. John's experiences underscored the importance of resilience and strategic decision-making, inspiring me to seek out mentorship and further educational opportunities. His insight into different finance roles have broadened my perspective on potential career paths, motivating me to explore various facets of the industry and align them with my interests and skills.

“Furthermore, John Olatunji's emphasis on the power of networking resonated deeply with me.

“He shared practical tips on how to build meaningful connections within the industry, which I plan to implement immediately. By attending industry events and engaging with professionals on platforms like LinkedIn, I aim to cultivate relationships that could open doors to internships and job opportunities. His stories of how mentorship played a pivotal role in his career has inspired me to actively seek mentors who can guide me through the complexities of the finance world.

“Overall, the session has enhanced my understanding of the finance landscape and has equipped me with actionable strategies to navigate my career path more effectively.”

Natalia, who is also in Year 12 at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form, added:
