Back55 Palace Street to 10 Downing Street – Dan Bilenga
Westminster City School’s Black History Month Speakers Series ended on Wednesday 23 October with former student, Dan Bilenga, who shared his journey from 55 Palace Street to 10 Downing Street with Year 13 students who are currently studying Politics and KS3 students.
Dan spoke to students on a variety of fundamental messages regarding the importance of being bold, fearless and determined to succeed in life. He also spoke about his journey in Politics thus far from meeting Keir Starmer in Camden and asking him for work experience to introducing Keir Starmer during the election campaign in Summer 2024.
Additionally, Dan shared his views on what is required and possible for a young black individual to get access to phenomenal opportunities in Politics, but also in whatever field students might pursue in the future.
Commenting on his visit to Westminster City School, Dan, said:
“It was lovely to be back at Westminster City School after so long and it was great to have the opportunity to speak to KS3 students in an assembly. They were so attentive throughout the talk, and I do hope that my advice will resonate with them.
“Speaking to the Year 13 students was the highlight of my day, and they asked insightful questions which made for a great discussion. It’s great to see the new cohort of Westminster City School students and I look forward to seeing them pursue their own aspirations.
“Remember, poverty charges interest!”
Year 13 student, Joshua, who was involved in the Q and A session with Dan, said:
“It was really inspiring to see and hear how Dan has been able to access some amazing opportunities and get to where he is now because of his hard work and determination.
Personally, I never knew that politics is for everyone until Dan informed us about his involvement with the Labour Party, working with Keir Starmer and Wes Streeting. I'll never forget the powerful point Dan made when he said that "poverty charges interest", which was quite the eye opener I needed.
“As a result, this has certainly changed my perspective on different areas of my life, helping me to see that I must not be complacent and wait for opportunities to come my way, rather I need to take the necessary steps to acquire the opportunities and experiences I know that I deserve.”
