Year 10 Students Explore the Prestigious Jesus College, University of Cambridge

12 February 2025

Recently, six Year 10 students from Westminster City School embarked on an inspiring journey to Jesus College, University of Cambridge. This exciting visit provided them with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of higher education and explore what it is like to study at one of the UK’s most renowned universities.

Throughout the day, these students gained invaluable insights into Cambridge’s academic rigour, the undergraduate courses, and the university’s application process. They attended informative talks from current Cambridge students, learned about the rich history and stunning architecture of the college during a guided tour, and enjoyed a delightful lunch in the College’s cafeteria.

Mr Drakes, Head of Maths at Westminster City School, accompanied students on this trip. He commented on the experience saying:

“A highlight of the visit was a thought-provoking undergraduate-style lecture delivered by Dr Gareth Wilkes, Assistant Professor of Pure Mathematics. Dr Wilkes engaged students in discussions on logic, mathematical axioms, and the work of Greek mathematician Archimedes. Our students were impressive with their insightful contributions, and many took the initiative to speak with Dr Wilkes personally after the session.

“This enriching experience not only provided a deeper understanding of university life at Cambridge but also equipped the students with practical advice on how to navigate their GCSE studies and make informed A Level choices.

“A special thank you to Jesus College, University of Cambridge, for hosting this memorable day, and to our Oxbridge Coordinator, Miss Clarke, for organising such a valuable experience for our students.”
