Kae-Ronique Earns Place on Target Oxbridge Programme

13 February 2025

Westminster City School is thrilled to share that Year 12 student, Kae-Ronique, has been selected for the highly competitive Target Oxbridge Programme. This initiative is designed to help students from underrepresented backgrounds, particularly those of Black and African Caribbean heritage, secure places at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. Kae-Ronique’s acceptance is a remarkable achievement and serves as an inspiration to all students.

Westminster City School caught up with Kae-Ronique to gain an in-depth understanding of her journey, motivations, and what it means to be part of this transformative programme.

What Motivated You to Apply for Target Oxbridge?

“As a student from an underrepresented background, I saw Target Oxbridge as a golden opportunity to receive personalised support from mentors who had already navigated the challenging journey to Oxbridge themselves.

“I was encouraged by family, friends and Year 13 students who had successfully joined the programme in previous years. But for me, it was about more than just support, it was about challenging myself academically and stepping out of my comfort zone. I knew that Target Oxbridge would provide the challenges, guidance, and a supportive community of like-minded individuals to help me refine my skills and reach my full potential.”

Securing a Place Out of 1,700 Applications

When asked about securing a spot among the 1,700 applicants for only 160 places, Kae-Ronique’s excitement was noticeable:

“I was incredibly anxious during the interview process, and it was challenging to express my thoughts confidently under pressure, especially when discussing unfamiliar ideas. But above all, I feel deeply grateful to have been selected. It’s such an honour that Target Oxbridge saw potential in me, and I know it’s only through God’s grace that I was able to overcome obstacles and be in this position.

“The programme has motivated me to improve academically and consistently push myself, and I look forward to making the most of the incredible support available. I also want to give back in the future to ones who share my dream of attending a top university, particularly by helping to break down barriers for those from underrepresented backgrounds due to ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or personal challenges such as being in the care system.”

Life After Westminster City School

After completing her Sixth Form studies at Westminster City School, Kae-Ronique has ambitious plans:

“I aspire to study Medicine at a prestigious institution like Cambridge, or another top Russell Group university such as the University of Edinburgh or King’s College London. I’m particularly passionate about surgery, with a focus on neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery. As I continue my studies, I also hope to be at the forefront of biomedical research, contributing to advancements that will make a real difference in healthcare. Additionally, I’m committed to advocating for global healthcare equity, which is a cause that’s very close to my heart.”

Kae-Ronique’s story is evidence that with the right guidance, determination, and a supportive community, students from all backgrounds can achieve the very best.

We are incredibly proud of Kae-Ronique and look forward to watching her continued success at Westminster City School and beyond.

‘Since launching in 2012, Target Oxbridge has helped over 350 students to secure Oxbridge offers. The various strands of the programme focus on intellectual, cultural and social development irrespective of personal or economic barriers.’
