A Visit to Imperial War Museum

21 March 2024

On Wednesday 20 March, a group of 30 Year 9 students from Westminster City School were privileged to attend the Imperial War Museum. During the visit, they were able to enjoy the World War I exhibition with many interactive activities and they were also led through the Holocaust exhibition.

Additionally, they received a lesson discussing the process that the museum undergoes when designing the exhibitions and the importance of recognising the Jewish stories from before, during and after the Holocaust. Students moved freely around the exhibition and engaged in a range of resources with the help of the interactive guides to support their understanding.

Ms Rowden, who is a History and Geography Teacher at Westminster City School accompanied the students on this trip. She commented:

"This trip was such a wonderful opportunity for our students and it was great for them to learn about historical artefacts in a new environment outside of the classroom."

Year 9 student Horus, who visited the Imperial War Museum said:

"In my opinion, this was an amazing experience because we were able to discover in greater detail about the Holocaust which has caused a major tragedy for the Jews. It gave us an opportunity to understand the entire history about Adolf Hitler and the Nazis. What I enjoyed the most during the tour was learning why and how the Holocaust happened. I enjoyed this because it has filled me with a sense of awe and interest."

Jireh, who is also in Year 9 added:

"The World War I exhibit was great! There were many things to discover such as the war vehicles, games, clothing and rations. The design of the trenches were admirable and very realistic too."

Eshan also commented on his personal experience saying:

"I really enjoyed the History trip to the Imperial War Museum and one new fact that I learnt about the Holocaust from the exhibition was that the Holocaust killed around 6 million Jewish people! This was something I never knew prior to this visit."
