Anas Earns Spot at UCL Chemistry Summer School
Congratulations to Year 12 student Anas, who has earned a well-deserved place on the University College London (UCL) Chemistry Summer School programme. This incredible opportunity allows sixth form students to deepen their knowledge of chemistry and explore potential career paths in the field.
A Passion for Chemistry
Anas is currently studying A Levels in Chemistry, Biology, and Maths at Westminster City School’s Sixth Form. Initially unsure about his interest in chemistry, his passion for the subject grew over time through hard work and perseverance. Reflecting on his academic journey, Anas shared: “I didn’t always like chemistry; at first, it seemed complex and hard to grasp. But, the more I revised for my GCSEs, I started to see how fascinating chemistry really is, and it became a subject I truly love.”
Such enthusiasm has inspired Anas to pursue opportunities such as the UCL Chemistry Summer School, which will give him exposure to scientific research, chemistry labs, and academic lectures within the context of a university environment.
Anas first learned about the UCL Chemistry Summer School during a visit from Dr Sam Cassidy, a lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry at UCL, who spoke to students in the Pathways to Medicine Programme at Westminster City School. “During the presentation, Dr Cassidy talked about the summer school and the application process, which inspired me to apply later that day,” Anas explained. "I submitted a personal statement outlining my academic background and passion for chemistry."
Navigating a Future in Medicine
When asked how the UCL Chemistry Summer School supports his future ambitions, Anas said:
“I’ve always enjoyed helping others. There’s something extremely rewarding about making people feel happier, and it makes me feel happy too. While I haven’t decided on a specific career path as yet, I’m considering a future in medicine and aspire to become a Doctor. I see the way patients feel so much more at ease when they leave the hospital than when they arrive, and I want to be a part of that process."
He continued: “Through the summer school, I hope to gain valuable skills that will help me on my journey. I’m especially excited to meet new people, expand my knowledge of chemistry, and challenge myself academically.”
The Pathways to Medicine programme at Westminster City School is designed to give sixth form students access to a wide range of opportunities through a designated member of staff with expertise and contacts in this field. The member of staff meets with students to ensure that they gain full benefit from the programme.
