Pathways to Law Programme at WCS

3 April 2025

On Thursday 3 April, Year 12 students who are a part of the Pathways to Law Programme at Westminster City School were treated to a lecture from guest speaker, Mellissa Akinya, a Lawyer in the Government Legal Department.

Mellissa was the 2023 Women in Law UK Mentor of the Year, a Law Society Legal Hero finalist, and the founder of the Black Lawyers Circle. She spoke passionately about a career in public service as a government lawyer, and the challenges she had to overcome to reach her current position.

Students left the talk with a clear idea of what day-to-day life is like for a Government Legal Department Lawyer, whether it is participating in debates in the Houses of Parliament, advising ministers on legal strategy, or advocating cases at the Supreme Court. Mellissa encouraged students to never give up on their aspirations, and not to let anything, whether it is background, ethnicity, or social class, stop them from pursuing their dream career.

Westminster City School's Sixth Form pathways help students to learn more about a particular industry and discover if they would enjoy a career in that field.

Within our Sixth Form, we offer four innovative pathways that help students gain work experience, receive mentoring, attend lectures and seminars, get interview practice, receive support with their university applications, and more.

Each pathway has a designated member of staff with expertise and contacts in their chosen field. They will meet with students to ensure that they gain full benefit from the programme.
